A report - What is the mood like at the Ahrtalkids?

"What's the mood like at the Ahrtalkids right now?" Was our dear Heike Holtz asked. She talks about the challenges that the children are currently facing:
"We are keeping a close eye on them at the moment and are also available to them by phone because it is necessary. They are insecure and there are usually a lot of problems at school. Many parents are now starting to mentally come to terms with the flood, as the patchwork on the collapse no longer works.
The children experience that mum and dad behave differently than they admit. The children relate this to themselves and feel guilty or don't want to share their worries with you because mum/dad are already so unwell that they can't sleep at night, the vocabulary just won't stick in their learning. Tiredness flies in at school, and so on and so forth. This Saturday, one by one, our young savages came in the door in a crouched posture. One mum asked for a parent-teacher conference.
What had happened?
The school pushes through the learning workload, lots of work is due. The children are insecure, overwhelmed. The weather is also playing a big role at the moment, because there is water everywhere and the Ahr has a lot of current ...
"I'm happy to see you, thank you for coming: YOU ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO US." This is how our day with the children begins. Little by little, they gain confidence and have more and more fun with today's activity: baking biscuits. Baking is fun! And they happily pack their biscuits into paper bags they have painted themselves to take home.
A little joy that they want to share with their parents at home.
We hope that the restored stability will last until next time. You will have regained enough strength for the week ahead.
"Vera?" asked a child today: "How much longer can we come to you?" "Many years," said Vera, "as long as you need us."
Simple and realisable for everyone: share with your fellow human beings that everyone belongs to the big picture and that everyone is important."
Thank you, dear Heike, for your touching words. They emphasise how important it is to support the people affected, for whom the flood disaster and its consequences still weigh so heavily on their minds and burden their everyday lives.
If you would like to support us in our work, we would be delighted to receive a donation. Because we still have a long way to go. Thank you for allowing us to walk it together, side by side ... 🧡
