The batik workshop at Malzirkus Ahrweiler took place under the direction of Steffi Raths.
She tells us:
"In batik, the pattern is created by folding, crumpling and binding and only then is it coloured. It is a creative way of expressing emotions and dealing with inner images. Firstly, the children had to decide how they wanted to approach batik. Constructive, structured, creative. Do I just tie a knot in the fabric? Do I fold or roll the fabric? Do I bind objects? What happens when? Can I create certain patterns? What happens when I mix colours?
How accurate is that? Does it come out the way I imagine?
Many roads lead to Rome.
First of all, the kids had to learn how to tie knots. Which they mastered with flying colours. Each child had their own way. And yes, not everything can be planned, so the tension remained until the knots were untied. What does it look like? It was exciting!
Batik is a valuable way of processing emotions and expressing oneself, with some surprising results. Patience was also trained, especially when bed linen is to be batiked: MANY, MANY KNOTS!
During the break, the children could treat themselves to strawberries
and cherries
from the region and recharge our batteries."
Thank you very much, dear painting circus team. The children have every right to be delighted with their creative one-offs.
Thanks to Children's aid organisation Global-Care Foundation, The Paritätische Wohlfahrtsverband - General AssociationAktion Deutschland Hilft and all private donors for their fantastic support.
