At Malzirkus Ahrweiler we had the pleasure of working with a seven-year-old boy who brought along a fascinating pop-up book about ships.
The three-dimensional illustrations of the ships, which unfolded when the book was opened, offered a unique insight into the design and structure of the ships.
Inspired by this technique, we decided to create a work of art that would reflect this interactive dimension.
Together with the boy, we developed a concept for a picture that gives the viewer the feeling of being able to look inside a ship. By skilfully folding and cutting paper, we managed to create a scene that was not only visually appealing, but also invited discovery and interaction.
This lesson was a wonderful example of how a book can stimulate creativity and lead to an exciting and educational visual arts experience.
