Using hammer and nail to create colourful thread pictures

"We used wooden boards as a base, which we first painted in colour. We used the drying time to practise using hammers and nails, and everyone was allowed to try out the boards.

Together we drew up the 'hammer rules': precise, small movements, consideration for the person sitting next to you and, above all, protecting your own fingers. Once everyone had chosen a motif, we started hammering. Not so easy until all the nails were firmly in place. The nails provided the framework for the special thread pictures.

Colourful wool was woven around the nails in exciting patterns and connections until the motifs took shape and form. Working with hammers, nails and yarn trains dexterity and can help with motor difficulties.

Nail pictures allow children to use a traditional tool in a creative context - a combination of art and craft. It shows that art doesn't just have to consist of colours and brushes, but that craft elements can also be part of the creative process. By using the tools responsibly and creating something beautiful, the children's self-confidence grows. And the best thing: everyone achieved great results!" - Steffi Raths and Sarah Uessem
