Random painting - letting go in the creative process

„The otherwise rather impasto acrylic paints were liquefied with water to such an extent that they almost behaved like watercolours. By gently tilting the canvas or guiding the paint with the hands, flowing transitions, delicate colour edges and surprising gradients were created. This method of working presented two small challenges: firstly, the layers of paint needed time to dry - a hairdryer helped us here - and secondly, this method requires a certain amount of courage because you consciously loosen your control a little and trust the process.

This is exactly what happened little by little: The participants became freer and freer, boldly letting the paint run, working with their hands and visibly enjoying what they were doing: „I love making mud“ or „This is really fun“ were just some of the spontaneous responses.

It was particularly important to me that everyone was able to experience how beneficial it is to let go of expectations and simply engage with their own experience. This way of working takes away the pressure of having to create something „perfect“. Instead, it creates space for playful experimentation and relaxation - for an inner sigh of relief. Many realised how liberating it can be when it is not the head that leads, but the material, the movement and the moment. This resulted in very different, lively and expressive works, each one a little surprise in itself. This must be repeated!“ - Sarah Uessem
