Making children's hearts light up

The floods in the Ahr valley and other affected areas not only destroyed homes and livelihoods, but also deeply wounded the souls of countless children. Over 3,000 traumatised children are receiving effective support and strengthening through art therapy in the painting circus and animal-assisted therapy.

Painting circus

The MALzirkus in Bad Neuenahr Ahrweiler and Schleiden supports children from the flood area with art therapy. Here they can work through their experiences and paint what they cannot express.

Animal-assisted therapy

We offer children the opportunity to deal with their fears and experiences through the animal and experiential education, to gain confidence and strengthen resilience.

FortunaMobile

The FortunaMobil gives children between the ages of 5 and 11 the opportunity to take part in a therapeutic programme in Rech.

This course is specifically about developing a new Base to make learning easy and fun again.

Holiday camps

At the holiday camps, it is particularly important to us that the children are strengthened and can overcome their fears. With lots of fun and enjoyment.

Action days

Teaching sustainability

Fruit and vegetable patches are planted at our painting circus and many animal and nature conservation projects are integrated. Mindfulness with resources and sustainability is important to us and is practised.

Why help is so important

On the devastating night of the flood, some of the children were forced to watch helplessly as their family members were swept away by the floodwaters. Filled with mortal fear, they remained on the rooftops while the stars in the sky were their only light on this dark night.

The parents' fears and traumatic experiences had serious consequences in the form of post-traumatic stress disorder. The children would not even let their own parents hug them, crawled under the table in panic when it rained, always carried their favourite things in their rucksacks to avoid further loss, suffered from severe fear of loss, had difficulty concentrating at school and developed behavioural problems and even eating disorders.

The profound impact of these traumatic events is real and shapes the lives of these children. Our work aims to empower these children and offer support on their path to recovery.
